What the class rating actually means in Colorado

Colorado defines three e-bike classes in CRS 42-1-102. The class decides where you can legally ride, and cities and counties can restrict further. Here is the short version.

CLASS 1

Pedal assist only, cuts out at 20 mph

Legal on nearly every bike path and most Boulder County trail systems.

Button Rock

CLASS 2

Throttle plus pedal assist, both capped at 20 mph

Legal on streets and most paved paths. Some natural-surface trails restrict it.

Hygiene · Sandstone · Sugar Mill

CLASS 3

Pedal assist to 28 mph, no throttle above 20

Street and bike-lane legal. Generally not allowed on shared-use paths.

Union · Nelson

Riders under 16 may not operate a Class 3 e-bike in Colorado, though they may ride as a passenger. Helmets are required for Class 3 operators and passengers under 18. We go through all of this with you at the shop — it takes five minutes and saves a ticket.
